Bailouts Reveal Precarious Finances Of Nigerian States

The continuing reliefs and bailouts given to states by the Federal Government reveal the dangerous financial situations of various sub-national governments in Nigeria.

They show that most states are not viable and may need to merge to consistently meet their social and economic obligations to their citizens.

As at the fourth quarter of 2015, the debt owed by Nigerian state governments to deposit money banks (DMBs) was in excess of N600bn.

In addition to N338 billion injected by the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) as bailout, the total credit to some 27 financially distressed states was in the neighbourhood of N1 trillion, an amount analysts say is quite significant.

The Federal Government is again offering a relief, which has led to the suspension of further deductions from their monthly allocations from the Federation Account for an unspecified period.

Nigeria Revenue Drops To 5-year Low As Tax, Oil Income Fall

Nigeria’s revenue fell last month to the lowest level in more than five years as taxes and oil earnings dropped, making it more difficult for the government of Africa’s largest economy to pay public workers.

The country’s federal, state and local governments were altogether allocated 300 billion naira ($1.5 billion) in March, the Ministry of Finance said in a statement e-mailed late Thursday from the capital, Abuja. To assist the lower-tier governments, the ministry also waived 10.9 billion naira of loan repayments.

About 27 of 36 states are “currently experiencing challenges meeting their salary payments,” the ministry said. “We are not able to guarantee that all states will be able to meet their salary obligations.”

What is in a shisha pipe A.K.A Hookah?

Shisha pipes use tobacco sweetened with fruit or molasses sugar, which makes the smoke more aromatic than cigarette smoke. Popular flavourings include apple, plum, coconut, mango, mint, strawberry and cola. Wood, coal, or charcoal is burned in the shisha pipe to heat the tobacco and create the smoke because the fruit syrup or sugar makes the tobacco damp.
When you smoke shisha, you and anyone sitting near you are breathing in smoke which releases toxins including carbon monoxide and heavy metals –reducing your body’s ability to carry oxygen around in your blood.
How harmful is shisha smoking?
Traditionally shisha tobacco contains cigarette tobacco, so like cigarettes it contains nicotine, tar, carbon monoxide and heavy metals, such as arsenic and lead. As a result, shisha smokers are at risk of the same kinds of diseases as cigarette smokers, such as heart disease, cancer, respiratory disease and problems during pregnancy.
It’s difficult to say exactly how much smoke or toxic substances you’re exposed to in a typical shisha session .People smoke shisha for much longer periods of time than they smoke a cigarette, and in one puff of shisha you inhale the same amount of smoke as you’d get from a smoking a whole cigarette.
The average shisha-smoking session lasts an hour and research has shown that in this time you can inhale the same amount of smoke as from more than 100 cigarettes.
Some people mistakenly think that shisha smoking is not addictive because the water used in the pipe can absorb nicotine. In reality, because only some of the nicotine is absorbed by the water, shisha smokers are still exposed to enough nicotine to cause an addiction.
Please always remember smoker are liable to die young.

Man To Die For Killing Fulani Man

The Supreme Court has affirmed the death sentence handed out to a farmer and father of five, James Afolabi, by the Kogi State High Court and the Court of Appeal.
In a unanimous judgment delivered on Friday, a five-man panel of the apex court held that there was no basis to disturb the concurrent finding of the trial and lower courts in their previous judgments.
Afolabi, from Kogi State, was convicted and sentenced to death by the Kogi State High Court, Lokoja in 2012 having been found guilty for the murder of a Fulani man, Abubakar Mohammed.

PDP Only Needs Three Senators To Produce Senate President - Yerima

A PDP-controlled Senate will spell doom for the All Progressive Congress government of President Muhammadu Buhari, former House of Representatives member Dr Haruna Yerima has said.

“The ruling party and the presidency must ensure that the ranks and files of APC senators remain intact,” Yerima told Daily Trust on Thursday.

The APC chieftain said with the ongoing criminal trial of Senate President Bukola Saraki, “something strategic must be done to avert the National Assembly’s ridiculing of the president.”

“You can imagine what will happen if the PDP takes over the Senate? What happened during the election of Saraki in June last year is an eye opener. There will be problems for Buhari’s government if the PDP takes over the senate,” he said.
