How tech companies can help reduce Unemployment in Nigeria and get quality talent while at it

This is the first quarter of 2016 and the statistics are rolling in for 2015. It has become obvious that unemployment is still a big topic in Nigeria and there’s no overnight miracle in plane sight. According to the Unemployment/Under-employment Watch Q1 2015 publication of the National Bureau of Statistics (NBS), 5,533,559 individuals are unemployed and 12,208,823 are underemployed. Though there are arguments as regards the authenticity of the publication by NBS, there is no doubt that the unemployment rate in Nigeria still needs to be worked on and I think organisations can help with it.

Roaming charges to be harmonized across ECOWAS countries

Roaming is the ability of a cellular customer to automatically make and receive voice calls, send and receive data, or access other services, including home data services, when travelling outside the geographical coverage area of their home network. This is usually done by piggybacking on an existing network that is in range. And these services can be pretty expensive for users.
Because of the exorbitant charges involved, calling friends and family abroad on their local numbers can be a nightmare of sorts. Neighbouring West Africans are not left out of these high costs of making and receiving calls when a customer travels regionally. With MTN as a case study, receiving calls with a Nigerian sim in Ghana can cost as much as ₦30 per

Google could be selling Boston Dynamics because even Google thinks these robots are terrifying

Google’s parent company Alphabet Inc. isn’t happy with Boston Dynamics, its robotics subsidiary. According to a report from Bloomberg, Alphabet executives think that Boston Dynamics is unlikely to generate substantial revenue in the next few years and is hard to work with. Toyota or Amazon could be interested in acquiring Boston Dynamics for their manufacturing or warehouse operations.
But even more interesting, internal messages at Google shows that the company itself is a bit scared by Boston Dynamics. We’ve all watched Boston Dynamics’ video last month with mixed feelings — there was a bit of excitement, sure, but also a lot of terror. These humanoid robots can fall and stand up again like in Terminator:

Lands.ng launches to take land search and acquisition in Nigeria online

If you wanted to acquire a land today in Nigeria, you’d probably have to go through a convoluted process of searching for reliable agents, hoping they don’t stab you in the back when you’re not looking. That’s the exact problem Lands.ng is attempting to solve.
Lands.ng is an online marketplace solely for land listings and its associated services in Nigeria. With increased penetration of digital technology, and new owners and investors coming into the Nigerian land market, there is a need for a more robust offering for connecting investors, buyers and sellers. Lands.ng is addressing a largely undeserved market — only about 25% of Nigeria’s landmass has been developed —  a pointer to how big the opportunity is.

Oil Price Rises Above $40 Per Barrel, OPEC mend Fences.

Oil prices rose above $40 per barrel yesterday, continuing to gather support after the world’s biggest suppliers firmed up plans to meet to discuss an output freeze. Oil producers, including Gulf Organisation of the Petroleum Exporting Countries (OPEC) members, support talks holding next month on a deal to keep production at current levels. That is even if Iran declines to participate, OPEC sources said on Wednesday.

A meeting would increase the likelihood of the first global supply deal in 15 years. U.S. crude was up 65 cents at $39.11 a barrel, having earlier risen as high as $39.38. Brent crude rose 38 cents to $40.71. “A smaller than expected gain in inventories in the U.S. also supported prices,” ANZ said in a morning note. Crude inventories increased 1.3 million barrels in the week to March 11 to 523.2 million, a much smaller build than the 3.4 million-barrel increase expected by analysts.
